Copperware, the Council is formed in a specific way; one is elected by the town, one chosen by the mages, one by the church, and one through trial by combat. The mages have every right to select whomever they choose for the Council, by what method they wish; this is the established form of the Council, since it was created. I cannot tell if you are trying to argue against the Mage's right to do this, or trying to argue against the way in which the Council is formed.
